Elmo Earflap Hat - Loom Knit

Elmo Earflap Hat

I've been working on some kid's earflap hats. I've been using a method very similar to the one in the video. She does an amazing job of explaining the process and marking the pegs for the earflaps.

I used the red round loom for an infant/toddler to make an Elmo hat. I used 2 strands of Red Heart red yarn and 1 strand of fun fur. I made the earflaps using 5 pegs on each side of the loom.

One thing I do slightly differently than the video, is after I knit the first earflap, I wrap across to the next one. After I've knitted it, I wrap back to the first earflap, so I end with one loop on the entire loom, rather than only where the earflaps are located. This prevents me from ever having to cut the yarn.

Anyway, here are photos of my Elmo hat in progress. I still need to add his face and the braids to the side of the earflaps. When I'm done with him, I have hopes of starting Cookie Monster. We love Sesame Street.

Elmo Hat Off the Loom

Knifty Knitter Elmo hat

I used strands of yarn cut to about 12 inches. I thread 3 strands through each of the 3 "holes" on the earflap. (The holes are really just gaps in the stitches.) After you feed the strands through, they are folded in half, so they hang down 6 inches. I took each of the 3 yarn sections and braided them. Around the bottom of the braid, I wrapped and tied a piece of yarn to secure the braid.

For the eyes, I used 2 strands of worsted weight white yarn and knitted 6 rows on the large end of the spool loom. I stuffed each eye with 3 cotton balls. I pulled both ends of the eye closed by sewing through each loop in the row and pulling the yarn tight. Next, I sewed on black felt for the mouth and center of each eye.

For the nose, I e wrapped and knitted 7 rows from the large end of the spool loom again. I used 2 strands of worsted weight orange yarn. I did it much the same as the eyes, accept I only stuffed it with one cotton ball to give it a more elongated appearance.

I used red yarn to stitch the eyes and nose to the hat, working from the inside so the stitching doesn't show. I used black thread to stitch the felt mouth and eye centers on.

My granddaughter is not quite 2 years old, she's 22 months as I write this. The hat done on the red loom fit her, but it was a little snug. The next earflap hat that I make for her (Cookie Monster) will be knitted on the green loom, so she will have room to grow into it.

Dinosaur Hat

Hat

1. Knit a basic roll brim hat following these instructions: Roll Brim Hat
2. Rather than letting the brim roll, fold the brim up around 1 1/2 inches and use a yarn needle and thread to stitch the brim into place. Stitch from the inside of the hat, ensuring that the stitches tacking the brim into place are discreet.

Eyes

1. Use the flower loom for each eye. Hold two white yarns together as one, begin with the draw string cast on.
2. Knit them using the two over two stitch. 
3. After 12 rows, change colors to the same color yarn as used for the hat. Using the same 2 over 2 stitch, knit 8 more rows.
4. Cut the working yarn to approximately 1 10 inches.
5. Sew through each loop on the flower loom to cast off.
6. Stuff the eye with Poly-fil.
7. Pull the working yarn tight to close the top of the eye.
8. Finish the eye by adding a black button.

Spikes

1. You will be making 3 triangle shaped spikes to line up down the back of the hat. You can use the same color as the hat itself, or a contrasting color of your choice.
2. Begin by wrapping only one. You will still be holding 2 yarns as one.
3. Increase stitch by wrapping an extra peg on each side of the peg wrapped in the previous row.
4. You will now have 1 peg with 2 loops on it and 2 pegs with only one loop. Knit on the peg that has 2 loops in the one over one fashion.
5. Wrap the next row using an increase (wrap and extra peg on each side of the previous row.) Knit all the pegs that have 2 loops. 
6. Repeat step 5 until you have knit 11 rows. 
7. Crochet cast off.
8. This is your first triangle. You will make 6 of them.
9. Sew 2 of the triangles together along 2 edges by sewing through each set of loops around the perimeter. Leave one side of the triangle open. Stuff with Poly-fil. 
10. After stuffing, sew the open edge of the triangle to the hat using a yarn needle and thread. This is your first spike. Continue until you have 3 spikes down the back of the hat in a straight line.

Beaded Hat

Instructions

1. You will be making a regular hat just like the instructions that came with the looms.

2. Using one strand of the Jiffy yarn, thread on 93 beads. (This sample used mini pony beads'"white, yellow, green and blue.) String the beads on the yarn and push them down the yarn strand about 5 or 6 yards.

3. Knit 10 rows. On the 11th row, take the yarn to the outside of the loom and lay the yarn over the groove in the peg. The bead will position between the pegs.

4. Knit the loop over the yarn between the beads. Hold the yarn loosely when knitting the bead row.

5. Knit 3 rows and then another row of beads. Continue until you have 3 rows of beads on the brim of the hat. Knit one more row, then pull the inside of the hat up and put the bottom row on the loom to make the brim.

6. Continue knitting 15 more rows and string a piece of yarn through the loops on the loom and draw up to make the top.

7. Top knot: Using some of the left over beads, thread them on the yarn and wrap the yarn so that the beads end up in the middle of the loops (not all of the loops have beads). Tie in the middle and attach to the top of the hat.

8. This hat will fit a small child. The colors and the way you add the beads can make for a wide variety of styles and looks.

Matching Hat and Scarf

Instructions
1. Scarf: Using the blue round loom, start with a yellow strand and a blue strand and continue to knit 10 rows. Then switch to both strands being yellow for another 10 rows, doing the same with two blue strands for another 10 rows. Because the yarn is corrugated your colors will vary in shade. Finish with 19 sections of color (19 sections of 10 rows a piece). This leaves you with a very thick tube scarf. For something a little less stiff use only one strand of yarn. Add fringe to the ends to give it a little more character or sew the ends together to close off the opening!
2. Double-sided hat: The key to making a double-sided hat is to make sure that you have the same amount of rows on both sides so that the designs do not overlap or show on the wrong side. Using the green loom, start by doing one strand of each color on one side. This consisted of 40 rows. Then begin the other side of the hat with two strands of yellow, which consisted of 10 rows. Switching to two strands of blue and knit 8 rows. Then switch to yellow, making 7 rows, and again blue with 8 rows. Finish with yellow making 7 rows. To close the hat off, used a blue strand of blue yarn to leave a fun little ring on the top of the hat. Note that this is a very big hat. It will be necessary to decide how many rows you will need to make a hat your size. Something else to keep in mind is that the color you finish with on your loom will become the top of your hat and NOT the rim. If you end up making the hat too large just roll it and have a brim! Horizontal Striped Hat

Instructions

1. Note: you may want to use the Green Loom which is the size that more adults make their hats, but the sample shown is an ex-large.

2. Using one strand each of Ranch Red and Burgundy knit 20 rows and make a brim, by pulling the first row back up on the pegs and knitting them over.

3. Pattern for the rest of the project: Change to the Spring Green and using 2 strands of yarn knit 5 rows, change to the Delft Blue and using 2 strands of yarn knit 5 rows.

4. Change to the Ranch Red and Burgundy and knit 15 rows. Repeat these three colors until you have 5 sets of knitting.

5. Finishing: Crochet the loops from the loom and sew the top flat.

6. Cut 7" pieces of yarn and using 6 pieces make fringe. Do one bunch of blue then a bunch of green across the top of the hat.

7. This is a very warm hat and scarf for those cold winter days. This project takes a little longer than most, but it is worth the time spent.

Begin by using one strand of Wool-Ease yarn and one strand of Fun Fur. Hold the two strands together and treat them like one strand. E wrap and knit 20 rows. Make the brim by pulling up the first row and putting it back on the loom. Knit off. (Detailed instructions and images for this step are included in the round loom packaging.)

Step 2: Replace the Fun Fur strand with another strand of Wool-Ease and knit 10 rows.

Step 3: Replace one of the Wool-Ease strands with the Fun Fur strand, and knit for another 10 rows.

Step 4: Replace the Fun Fur strand with the other strand of Wool-Ease, and knit for another 10 rows.

Step 5: Replace one of the Wool-Ease strands with the Fun Fur strand, and knit the last 10 rows. Sew the stitches off of the loom using the yarn needle and the Wool-Ease yarn (see round loom instructions for details). Pull up tight and tie the top (see round loom instructions for finishing a hat).

Step 6: The hat will flop over for a free and fun look. It will be about 14" long from the bottom of the brim to the top of the hat.

Patterned Hat

For Adult Size Hat Loom

Instructions

1. Start at top of hat: E-wrap around the entire hat loom twice. Knit off (taking the bottom loop over top loop and peg). Repeat 2 more times. TIP: The e-wrap is a basic wrap of the yarn around the pegs. It crosses on the inside of the loom, and looks like a cursive lowercase e when viewed from above.

2. Create patterned row: Take the loop on peg 1 and place it on peg 2. Knit off on peg 2 leaving peg 1 empty. Repeat with peg 3 and peg 4, taking the loop on peg 3, placing it on peg 4, and knitting off on peg 4. Continue this pattern around the loom, leaving every other peg empty.

3. E-wrap the entire loom again, and then knit off on every other peg that has 2 loops on it. The loom will then have one loop on each peg.

4. E-wrap and knit off 3 more rows. Then repeat steps 2 and 3.

5. Continue knitting with desired pattern until hat is desired height. (We used 6 patterned rows total and ended with 3 knit rows.)

6. Create brim: E-wrap twice around the loom and then knit off. Use the purl stitch on the next row (see instructions for Purl Stitch on the Knifty Knitter page). E-wrap and knit off the third row, and then purl stitch on the fourth row. Repeat this pattern, alternating e-wrapping and purl stitching for 4 more rows.

7. Crochet the loops off of the loom using a loose chain stitch and keep it loose or otherwise it will be too tight (see instructions for Chain Stitch on the Knifty Knitter page).

Woven Top Hat Pattern for the Knifty Knitter Purple Hat Loom

This is an modified version of the "Flat-Topped Hat" from the Provo Craft booklet "Knifty Knitter Adult Hat Loom Patterns," This hat is flat at the top and begins by weaving the yarns on the loom, rather than knitting. The body of the hat is 9 rows of e wrapped knit. The brim of the hat in the original pattern alternated knit and purl stitches to make a ribbing around the brim. My thoughts are that this would make a great Easter basket if a handle were added. There is a Provo Craft pattern for a backpack that starts much the same with a woven bottom.

1. Before you begin number the pegs on the purple hat loom. Hold the loom with the pegs pointing toward you. The anchor peg should be positioned at the bottom. Peg 1 will be just above the anchor peg and slightly to the right. Continue numbering to 48 in a counter clockwise direction.
2. Measure 20 yards of yarn fold it in half and using two yarns as if they are one prepare the loom.
3. Wrap the anchor peg.
4. Pull the yarn across the loom and wrap peg 24. 
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
5. Cross the loom back to peg 48. Wrap under and pull yarn across to peg 2.
6. Pull the yarn up to peg 23. Weave over and under to peg 25. 
7. Cross back to 47. Wrap peg. Weave over and under to peg 2.
8. Cross to peg 22. (Continue in this manner until you get to peg 13.)
9. Go around peg 37 and weave back. This finishes the hat top.
10. Ewrap the loom and knit 9 rows.
11. For the brim - Knit 5 rows of ribbing, by alternating knit and purl stitches. (k,p,k,p,k,p,etc.)
12. Crochet cast off.

 

Flat Top Hat Pattern

The flat top hat is flat at the top because it's finished with a horizontal seam, rather than gathered. This pattern is knitted with 2 yarns as if they are one. You can use fun fur for one of the yarns if you wish. For a small woman's hat the green round loom is used. If you like a larger hat, use the purple hat loom, or the extra large yellow loom.

1. Knit 20 rows. 
2. Make a brim by pulling the first row up through the center of the loom. Put the loops back on the pegs. Knit.
   (Now you have a double thickness brim.)
3. Knit 20 more rows.
4. Crochet cast off.
5. Turn the hat inside out. Whip stitch the top closed as a flat seam, or crochet it closed as a flat seam, whichever you prefer.
6. Tie off the yarn. 
7. Turn the hat right side out.

Easy Peasy Rolled Brim Hat for Kids

This pattern is for young kids or babies. The red round loom is used. If you want a slightly larger hat for an older kid, try the green loom.
 
You will need:

• Green Round Knifty Knitter Loom
• Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Yarn (or scrap yarn)

1. Knit 30 rows
2. Cut the working yarn 12 inches long.
3. Using the working yarn and a yarn needle, sew through each loop as you remove it from the loom.
4. Pull it tight to close the hat and tie a square knot.
5. The brim of the hat will naturally roll up.
   
   

Basic Beanie Hat on the Knifty Knitter Yellow Long Loom

This pattern is for a basic beanie that measures 18 inches around (circumference) and is 11 1/2 inches tall. It is knitted on the long loom, so it's one of the few patterns for a hat on a long loom, rather than a round loom.

You will need:

• Red Heart Super Saver Yarn - Light and Lofty in your choice of color
• Yellow Knifty Knitter Long Loom
• Knitting Hook
• Yarn Needle

1. E-wrap and knit 50 rows using the one-over-one stitch.
2. Cut the working yarn leaving a tail that is at least 12 inches long.
3. Thread the yarn through a yarn needle. 
4. Starting with the peg closest to the working yarn, thread the yarn through each loop and remove it from the peg. 
5. Move to the next peg and repeat step 4. 
6. When all the loops have been removed from the loom, pull the yarn tight, knot it and weave it into the inside of the beanie.
